A paradigm shift in technologies & investment opportunities is needed to address brain rigidity which includes the convergence of mental health, longevity, & psychedelics —we need a fresh approach to technologies and investing. We need a new investment opportunity: Brain Matrix.
The escalating brain health crisis globally —severe social, physical, & economic consequences, were already escalating before the COVID-19 pandemic. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that approximately 450 million individuals were suffering from mental health conditions, marking mental health disorders among the leading causes of illnesses and disability. Estimates by The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) put the consequences of mental illnesses cost up to 4% of GDP worldwide.
Our social structure continues to be plagued by brain rigidity from dementia & mental health disorders, learning disabilities, to the impact of the COVID pandemic & disparities in educational health care access.
As well, some of the most persistent social issues—crime, homelessness, death by hopelessness—will be impossible to solve without addressing the root causes in addition to the treatment & support of individuals with brain disorders and vulnerabilities. Without addressing brain disorders, our communities & workplaces will continue to be increasingly challenged to maintain sustainability economically & socially.
Exploring synergies between mental health, longevity, and psychedelics can have consequential benefits for the world. Each of these three elements have respective healing nuances affecting our core asset —the brain. And because the longevity field is centered on bridging the gap between preventative health and lifestyle intervention, it has a responsibility to promote mental health.
Embracing mental health through the prism of brain health is imperative because mental health is closely intertwined with brain health in that the brain offers countless aging insights with regard to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other neurological disorders.
As well, longevity is intertwined closely with mental and physical healing. In that healing, psychedelics is beginning to revolutionize how we treat mental disorders (psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy).
The aforementioned three elements invite the suggestion that cultivating well-being through transforming our mind will change the brain in ways that impact the body. This may have beneficial consequences for our physical health.
The manifestation of resilience at the community, organizational, & societal levels is promising. Through increased brain health awareness & preventative measures with regard to social interaction, daily life, well-being, mood, sleep, as well as those high-level cognitive functions, thriving is attainable for all, including the most vulnerable.
Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to create new, disruptive technologies & practices as it relates to the above referenced challenges & opportunities in a timely manner. What is needed is an approach which is cross-functional, multi-disciplinary, & a new agency optimized for innovation. All of these promote new investment, governance, & altruistic leadership.
